Collection description

In this dissertation I propose a new interpretation of the mechanical-astronomical computer known as Antikythera Mechanism (II cent. BC). The key idea is that its design was based οn the law of the circular hodograph, a geometrical picture of the inverse-square law found by William Rowan Hamilton in 1846. If the reconstruction here proposed is accepted, the Antikythera Mechanism becomes evidence that a mechanical-astronomical theory of gravity was developed in Hellenistic times.
