Collection description
The thesis highlights the intricate relationship between innovation and collaboration in improving the resilience of destinations in the ever-changing landscape of the tourism industry. By embracing the principles of open innovation and recognizing the cultural and regional dimensions of tourism, destinations are expected to effectively respond to the challenges they inevitably face, thereby ensuring their long-term sustainability and success. Central to the thesis is the idea that destination resilience is multifaceted and requires a holistic approach involving multiple factors and stakeholders. Through the lens of dynamic resilience, the thesis emphasizes the importance of the ability to adapt, transform and ultimately thrive in the face of adversity. Among recent events, the COVID-19 pandemic was a powerful reminder of the tourism sector's vulnerability to external shocks. It underscored the undeniable need for innovative approaches to cope with these disruptions and to emerge stronger and more resilient than before. The insights of this thesis emphasize that, within the tourism industry, the resilience of a destination is a collective effort, requiring the interaction of various stakeholders. The dynamics of open innovation support the idea that the best solutions often emerge from a collaborative approach. At the same time, the thesis outlines the key role of culture in shaping the character and attractiveness of tourism destinations. It highlights the importance of preserving, promoting and fostering local cultural heritage as an essential component the identity of a destination. Cultural experiences, including culinary traditions, contribute to authentic and memorable experiences for tourists. The regional focus on collaboration, exemplified by Regional Innovation Systems, underscores that the strength of a destination lies in its ability to operate as a cohesive unit. Based on these considerations, adopting a thesis-by-publication approach, this work contains three distinct scholarly contributions to propose a new conceptualization of tourism destination resilience.
