Abstract

The present doctoral dissertation investigates the sustainability and circularity of the tyre life cycle through a combined methodological approach, providing a comprehensive understanding of the environmental burdens arising from tyre production and the potential for material and energy recovery at the end of life. In a context where the industries are increasingly interested to align with circular economy principles, the tyre sector stands out with its complexity and energyintensive manufacturing and raw materials supply. This research tries to address these challenges, by applying two important sustainability tools to the tyre life cycle. The first part of this thesis work focuses on the quantification of environmental impacts related to a real case of industrial tyre production, while the second examines the potential of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) within the European framework. Together these analyses can contribute to identifying strategies and opportunities to reduce the environmental burden and enhancing circularity, supporting the transition of tyre sector towards a more responsible value chain.
