Abstract

The aim of this research work is to explore the possibility of creating an integrated system that includes underwater optical data communication and the use of a complete optical QKD system for wireless information exchange in a marine environment. To do this, we model the underwater optical channel taking into consideration several features such as static attenuations, turbulence and scattering and then we use this model to perform a feasibility analysis. Then, we empirically characterize the underwater channel and we design the prototype, both quantum and classical subsystems, with a novel approach by exploiting the features of a standard QKD-fiber system and converting them to the useful frequency window with non linear optical processing for the first, and by using a Radio over Fiber (RoF) approach in a wireless manner for the last one. Finally, we combine them in a unique system, which we test in a controlled environment.
