Abstract
This PhD thesis investigates the effects of Western and high-fructose diets on gut and systemic metabolic homeostasis and evaluates probiotic-based preventive strategies in rat models. Diet-induced metabolic dysfunction was characterized by inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial impairment, and insulin resistance affecting the gut–liver–muscle axis. Administration of Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 and Shouchella clausii SF174 attenuated tissue-specific alterations, preserved intestinal barrier integrity, modulated gut microbiota composition, and improved mitochondrial function and insulin sensitivity. These findings support probiotics as promising nutritional strategies to counteract diet-induced metabolic disorders.
