Abstract

The expansion of cities has made the urban environment a central focus of ecological research. This interest derives from the rapid and continuous filtering processes exerted by urban environments. Investigating organisms and their responses to biotic and abiotic urban factors enhances our understanding of the ecological processes that favor some species over the others. Plants, pollinators and their interactions are all affected by biotic and abiotic urban factors. Throughout my three-year PhD program, I investigated plants, pollinators and their interactions within urban environments. The effect of different land cover on pollinator communities and on the pollination of a wild plant, Raphanus raphanistrum, was studied along a rural-urban gradient in Naples, a southern city of Italy (Chapter 1), while the pollinators’ perspective was explored by monitoring the attractiveness of an ornamental plant, Salvia yangii, within the anthropogenic landscapes of Milan, a northern city of Italy (Chapter 2). Finally, in the same urban context, plant-pollinator interactions were examined in different categories of urban green areas and in terms of shared floral resources as reservoirs of bee pathogens (Chapter 3). Overall, the results underscore the relevance of urban environments as study systems and provide insights into plant-pollinator interactions, involving two generalist plant species in two different Italian cities.
