Abstract

The rapid growth of industrial activities and chemical production during the Anthropocene has led to the continuous release of many chemicals into the environment, which has raised concerns regarding the possible impact of such chemicals. Among the emerging contaminants, the list of chemicals is diverse, ranging from natural to anthropogenically synthesized chemicals whose environmental and toxicological impact is not fully understood. These include the class of rare earth elements, pharmaceutical and personal care products, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and nanomaterials, and naturally occurring bioactive compounds. The thesis, therefore, seeks to examine the ecological impact of emerging chemical stressors in the marine environment, with emphasis on the impact of REEs and, as a complementary study, the impact of natural bioactive compounds from the marine environment. The study, which adopts the One-Health approach, seeks to examine the impact of chemical stressors on the health of marine organisms and the possible transmission to the food chain. Experimental research was carried out on important marine species at different trophic levels. Long-term exposure experiments tested the impact of cerium and gadolinium on the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, and the toxicity of gadolinium was tested on the gametes and early stages of the bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. Other experiments included chemical and ecotoxicological approaches for studying the interaction of pollutants in beach sand media, and the ecological impact of natural secondary metabolites produced by marine organisms. Overall, the results demonstrated species-specific responses to emerging contaminants and underscore the need to consider chronic exposure, environmentally relevant concentrations, and multiple biological endpoints in a more realistic approach to environmental risk assessment.
