Abstract

The thesis "Beyond the Code: Bridging the Human and Organizational Skill Gap in Digital Twin Implementation" explores the human and organizational dimension in the adoption of Digital Twins (DT). The full potential of this technology is, in fact, hindered not by technological limits, but by a "wall of complexity" linked to a skill gap and strong cultural resistance. Through a Systematic Literature Review of 55 scientific articles, the study maps four fundamental pillars of competencies: technical, cognitive, soft, and managerial. However, it also highlights a profound "contextual blindness" (Context Gap) in current research, which tends to treat these skills as universal, ignoring the geographical or industrial context in which they are applied. To overcome this limitation, the research conducts an empirical analysis on the IBM corporate case, comparing Silicon Valley with the Bari Hub. The investigation demonstrates that the context acts as a true "ecosystemic filter": - In the US, adoption is rapid and driven by a logic of hyper-growth and a "fail fast" culture. - In Bari, embedded in a fabric of SMEs and guided by institutional directives (PNRR), an incremental approach prevails, requiring intense cultural mediation. In conclusion, the study proposes a "Situated Competency Framework". The manager of the future must not only be a technical expert, but a hybrid "process translator". Pushing towards the Industry 5.0 paradigm, the thesis states that the Digital Twin must act in a human-centric way: not to replace the worker, but to augment their decisions and promote their well-being.
