Abstract
Peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the most important vegetable crops recognized for its nutritional value and for the content of bioactive compounds with beneficial health effects. Genetic improvement programs aim to improve the commercial and nutritional quality of the fruits and to develop new cultivars capable of adapting to environmental changes. . This thesis investigates the genetic basis of the main agro-qualitative traits of the fruit, integrating genomic, proximal and remote sensing phenomic and metabolomics approaches. The work focuses on different mapping populations devide from intra- and interspecific crosses. In two multiparent F₂ populations of C. annuum, QTLs associated with agronomic traits (such as fruit weight, fruit size and colorimetric characteristics) high-resolution morphometric parameters obtained by digital acquisition, and bioactive compounds such as sugars, organic acids, vitamin C and β-carotene were identified. The analysis detected 200 QTLs and highlighted several pleiotropic clusters regulating metabolic processes and fruit development differentiation. Eight mapping populations served as basis todetermine the genetic attributes of the fruit shape and size, highlighting highlighting several shared and population-specific QTLs and chromosome clusters holding potentially involved candidated genes.. Finally, the response of the pepper to water stress was evaluated in 25 genotypes at the vegetative stage by high-efficiency phenotyping with the PlantEye 3D system, allowing the non-invasive characterization of numerous morpho-functional parameters. Overall, the results obtained expand the knowledge on the genetic basis of fruit quality and environmental adaptation in peppers, providing useful information for the development of varieties with high quality performance and resilience to abiotic stresses.
