Abstract
Agricultural systems are increasingly exposed to interconnected environmental, economic, technological, and social challenges that threaten food security, rural livelihoods, and the long-term sustainability of rural territories. Climate change, resource degradation, market volatility, digital transformation, and demographic change are reshaping the conditions under which agriculture operates, requiring new approaches to knowledge exchange, stakeholder coordination, and rural development. While agriculture is highly vulnerable to these pressures, it also represents a key domain for implementing sustainability transitions and strengthening the resilience of rural communities. This thesis investigates how agricultural and rural systems can respond to contemporary global transformations. Building on a transdisciplinary perspective, it conceptualizes agriculture as a dynamic socio-ecological and entrepreneurial ecosystem characterized by evolving actors, multi-scalar relationships, and continuous flows of knowledge and innovation. The research is organized into four interconnected studies. The first examines the emerging competencies required by agricultural advisors to support innovation, resilience, and sustainability transitions. The second develops the transition from rural area to Digital Rural and Agricultural Business Ecosystem. The third identifies and maps the key stakeholders operating within agricultural innovation ecosystems, analysing their roles and the mechanisms through which local and extra-local knowledge are mobilized and transferred. The fourth explores how interactions between agents and rural communities influence processes of community revitalization and sustainable development. Overall, the thesis advances the understanding of agricultural systems as adaptive and evolving ecosystems and provides theoretical and practical insights for designing more resilient, participatory, and sustainability-oriented agricultural and rural policies.
