Abstract
Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers are linked to chronic low-grade inflammation. ‘Bioactive lipids’ are key players in regulating inflammatory response. The main classes of bioactive lipids are: eicosanoids, specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), lysoglycerophospholipids-sphingolipids and endocannabinoids (eCBs). Dysregulation of these lipids has been linked to several diseases with an inflammatory pathogenesis including cancer. We described a novel function of SPMs demonstrating that two SPMs (i.e. RvD1 and LXB4) suppress angiogenesis, thus inhibiting GI tumor growth. In the GI context, CBs induce apoptosis and necrosis of cancer cells. To date, several reports suggest a link between SPM and eCB pathways, highlighting common precursors, metabolic enzymes, and the possibility that one class of lipid could exert its functions by sustaining the production of the other one. We aimed at evaluating a plausible cross-talk between functional activity of eCBs and SPMs in GI cancers.
