Abstract
This thesis investigates the interplay between managerial strategies and policy tools during industrial transformations, focusing on two case studies: the (former) Indesit in Campania, Italy, and the B/S/H Bosch Hausgeräte plant in Berlin-Spandau, Germany. The study adopts a multidimensional approach, analyzing macro-level contextual factors, meso-level policy frameworks, and micro-level organizational agency. Particularl, the research explores industrial transitions across three phases: Industrialization (1950–1973), Deindustrialization (1973–2015), and Reindustrialization 4.0 (2015–2023), highlighting the resilience of the manufacturing sector and the emergence of new entrepreneurial behaviors driven by Industry 4.0. Through a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative analyses of socio-economic data with qualitative insights from 45 semi-structured interviews conducted across the two cases. The analysis reveals divergent trajectories in response to deindustrialization and the challenges of Industry 4.0. B/S/H in Germany capitalized on robust industrial policies and collaborative frameworks, preserving its industrial identity. In contrast, Indesit in Italy faced greater institutional and market constraints, leading to its gradual incorporation. The findings underscore the pivotal role of the local actors and managerial strategies in navigating industrial transitions and achieving sustainable development. This work contributes to the literature on economic sociology by integrating theories of regional development, deindustrialization, and innovation, offering insights into the socio-economic and institutional dynamics shaping contemporary industrial transformations.
