Abstract
Nowadays the fast expansion of several industrial sectors and world’s population growth requires a high demand for water sources and guaranteeing water with certain parameters is an important challenge. In the last years, the spread of new compounds of natural or anthropogenic origin in the aquatic environment has become a critical issue for all the world both for the ecosystem and population health. The need to remove pharmaceutical compounds from water and wastewater has aroused considerable interest in Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), whose effectiveness depends on the generation of reactive free radicals, capable of oxidizing and decomposing numerous compounds (Ketoprofen, Ibuprofen, Amoxicillin, etc.). Heterogeneous photocatalysis is an efficient method if an active semiconductor is used. However, adsorption is the best wastewater treatment technique, thanks to its simplicity, no byproducts generation, mild operation conditions, economy, use of a wide type of adsorbents and easy scalability. Adsorption is an effective method to remove Iodinated Contrast Media (ICM) such as Iopamidol. Nowadays there is the need to optimize common methods by combining existing simple different technologies to implement effluent treatments. In fact, the use of the Rotating Packed Bed (RPB) and the application of ultrasounds in a continuous flow system can result in process intensification increasing the productivity with a lower impact on the environment. The final purpose is always to realize processes that can be applied and transferred from laboratory to industrial scale, making the single process useful for all the community.
