Abstract

The central research question guiding this study is: how does the European Union look at the relationship between food security and sustainability? To explore this question, three sub-questions are addressed: what insights does the existing body of food security and sustainability relationship literature provide within the European member states?; what are the institutional frames about this relationship? And what are the trade-offs with its strategic partners?; How this concepts’ relationship influences the political impact of the European Union? The dissertation employs diverse qualitative methodologies, including a systematic literature review to synthetize insights from EU member states, framing theory and content analysis to explore institutional frames and trade- offs, and a semi-historical review to investigate the influence of this relationship on the EU’s political role. The findings are presented across chapters, each published in or submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Chapter 2 synthesizes academic literature on food security and sustainability in the EU, identifying four major themes and two dominant narratives. Chapter 3 presents a framing analysis comparing EU and African Union perspectives, highlighting three distinct categorizations and exploring similarities and trade-offs. Chapter 4 critically examines the EU- Mercosur trade agreement, shedding light on the external impact of EU environmental and sustainability standards. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on alternative proteins, particularly insects as food and feed, identifying innovative solutions and opportunities for sustainable food systems. The dissertation culminates in Chapter 7, which synthesizes the findings to address the central research question, reflecting on recent developments and the EU’s evolving strategies in the agri-food sector. The study concludes with references and the Appendix section, offering a comprehensive contribution to understanding the interplay between food security and sustainability within the EU and its broader implications for global and regional policymaking.
