Abstract

The central theme of this research is Building Information Modeling for road infrastructure, also known as Infrastructure-BIM, or I-BIM. In Italy, Legislative Decree 209/2024 is the latest in a series of decrees and measures on BIM, and it provides for the mandatory introduction of BIM from 2025 for public works whose amount exceeds 2 million euros. Currently, there is an urgent need to upgrade corporate structures and resources for the adoption of BIM. Fitting into this exigency scenario, this PhD Thesis proposes a technical methodology for the transition of projects CAD-based to the BIM context. This methodology, CAD-to-BIM, evolves into CAD-to-BIM 2.0 with the integration of a suite of algorithms, implemented in a visual programming language environment (VPL-E), that automate some modeling operations, making the whole process much faster and more reliable. Validated on the case study of a suburban road, with three roundabouts, 2 classic level intersections, and a bicycle lane, with the interference of a viaduct, a retaining wall, a maintenance lane, and several hydraulic works, the methodology reduces the modeling time from the four weeks in the schedule to a single day. The system of algorithms that makes this possible is based on the use of a spreadsheet that must be appropriately designed by the user. The CAD-to-BIM 2.0 methodology stands as a starting point for further developments in the direction of automation and standardization of road projects in BIM.
