Abstract
This thesis starts from the in-depth analysis of the multifaceted lighting landscape, examining its evolution with particular attention to advanced control systems and the integration of Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) principles. The right light at the right time is the mantra to follow also in the design of offices which are the case study addressed in the thesis. Most of our day is spent in an office and many of them still have outdated (fluorescent) lighting system, which often not only fails to meet standards in terms of illuminance measured on surfaces, but also in terms of energy efficiency. Light is also one of the most impactful stimuli for circadian rhythms should be ‘administered’ in quantity and quality as if it were a basic component of our diet. But if most of our time we cannot decide what kind of light to have, how can we balance our diet appropriately? A key segment of our investigation involved the in-depth planning of the relamping of four offices - the fluorescent panels were replaced with LED panels with a tuneable white control system - with the evaluation of circadian, energy savings and economic sustainability. Additionally, end-user responses are examined to evaluate the effectiveness of lighting strategies in improving the overall office environment and adapting lighting solutions to human needs. The users of the offices were involved before and after the installation through a perceptual/qualitative questionnaire on the lighting system. Switching to a control system and a well-defined protocol of lighting scenes that vary throughout the day means changing the light, habits and way of experiencing the workplace. Adaptation, like the transition from dark to light, is everything also in the technological and green transition.
