Abstract
Decision-making automation is becoming an increasingly widespread phenomenon, particularly within large organisations, where the adoption of advanced systems is significant. The research presented in this thesis fits into this context, aiming to investigate decision-making automation through three main research objectives. (I) Produce an operational definition of Automated Decision-Making Systems (ADMS). (II) Building a research tool for assessing the social implications of the ADMS. (III) Administering the research tool to the management of a company that develops ADMS to assess the social implications of a specific system identified as a case study. This research is composed of two main phases. The first is the On Desk, while the second is the On-Field. This research integrates diversified approaches to investigate the development of sociotechnical systems. The combination of different research methods allows the overcoming of the limitations of the single methods. The thesis findings highlight how the role of the social researcher, an expert in social phenomena and research methods, can be put at the service of expert contexts and knowledge to combine perspectives and identify and assess the social implications of the ADMS and, specifically, the ADMS case study.
