Abstract
Native orchids represent a valuable resource for biodiversity conservation and the enhancement of urban and peri-urban ecosystems. This research focused on integrating innovative techniques for the propagation and cultivation of Mediterranean orchids, combining in vitro approaches with advanced acclimatization practices. Asymbiotic in vitro germination has proven to be an effective tool to overcome biological and environmental limitations, ensuring high germination rates and accelerating seedling development. Particular attention was given to the selection of seeds derived from phenotypes with morphological traits predictive of higher germinability, resulting in plants of high aesthetic and ecological value. A central aspect of this research was the contribution of native orchids to improving the ecological permeability of urban and peri-urban environments. By creating functional habitats and promoting connected ecological networks, these plants can facilitate the movement of pollinator species and enhance ecosystem resilience. Their reintroduction represents a strategic opportunity for the rewilding of green spaces and the establishment of ecological corridors that support local biodiversity. Thanks to the collaboration with Batù Srl and Piante Pazze Srl, effective acclimatization and planting protocols were developed, optimizing substrates and growth conditions for the transition of plants from in vitro to pot cultivation. These protocols helped integrate in vitro techniques with advanced in vivo cultivation practices, fostering the growth of healthy and vigorous plants. The results highlight how the application of in vitro techniques, combined with an integrated cultivation approach, can facilitate the reintroduction of native orchids into urban and peri-urban contexts. These plants, in addition to enhancing the landscape and ecological value of green spaces, contribute to creating habitats for pollinators and other species, promoting rewilding and the ecological permeability of urban ecosystems. This work underscores the importance of a shared commitment between research, the private sector, and public policies to ensure the success of these initiatives and the conservation of biodiversity.
