Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic profoundly affected social structures, educational systems, and individual psychological well-being, exposing systemic weaknesses and reshaping the understanding of mental health. This doctoral research investigates the relationship between the pandemic and the psychological distress experienced by adolescents and university students, proposing new perspectives for integrating mental health care into educational policies. The study is structured around three main areas: the historical and social context of Covid-19 and its impact on young people; the Italian university system and its institutional responses; and the European dimension, with a comparative focus on mental health strategies and inclusion policies. The research combines statistical analysis, field interviews, and institutional case studies—such as the Faculty of Agriculture in Campania and Pegaso International University—to explore effective models of counselling and student support. Results highlight the growing need for permanent, structured psychological services within universities, as well as for longitudinal monitoring and staff training. The European comparison, particularly the case of Malta, demonstrates that inclusive and preventive approaches to mental health can strengthen educational equity and resilience. Ultimately, the study argues that the pandemic transformed a social emergency into an opportunity to redefine well-being as a fundamental academic and human right. Investing in psychological support is presented not only as a health measure but as an essential factor in improving academic performance, inclusion, and the quality of higher education.
