Abstract
The dissertation includes three chapters on applied microeconomics and development economics, with a focus on the relationship between social cohesion and growth opportunities in developing countries. The first chapter reports new evidence about the relationship between perceived economic status and social trust and shows that biases in perceived economic status are relevant in studying economic interactions and policy analysis. The second chapter explores the relationship between social cohesion and informal risk-sharing engagements. By comparing theoretical predictions on the incentives to share risk with empirical laboratory data collected in Colombia, the chapter highlights the role of social cohesion in improving the efficiency of risk-sharing. Lastly, the third chapter include empirical tests on the causal relationship between agricultural production and social cohesion in Colombian municipalities, showing that a higher use of labour-intensive agriculture can increase social cohesion in rural areas.
