Abstract

Over the past 10 years, most aircraft accidents have been caused by crew error. Pilots and cabin crew are exposed to several stressors, and the most inherent challenge of altitude is hypoxia. The effects of mild hypoxia on cognitive status, both during commercial and general aviation flights, are not well understood. There is currently no validated method to quickly and autonomously assess a pilot's cognitive fitness during flight. We created a digitilised test highly specific to pilots able to assess a range of cognitive abilities in particular executive function with strong working memory. Self-administered and quick to complete, the test provides an in-flight assessment of the pilot's cognitive status, making in-flight fatigue monitoring a reality. The widespread availability of the Internet complements specialist aviation communications, enabling remote self-testing with centralised assessment and monitoring.
