Abstract
This PhD thesis investigated novel (hyper)thermophilic carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) with the aim of enabling more efficient and sustainable biocatalytic and biotransformation processes. The work combined fundamental and applied approaches: metagenomic discovery and biochemical characterisation of enzymes with unique properties, and the application of CAZymes to valorise agro-industrial residues, such as spent coffee grounds and olive-oil by-products, and to modify starch granules to obtain added-value bioproducts. In parallel, the thesis examined how institutional frameworks support industrial biotechnology, aligning the RIS3 Campania strategy with the vision of the European research Infrastructure on Biotechnology IBISBA. This contributed to mapping regional innovation needs and integrating research-infrastructure services into regional development strategies, particularly for start-ups and SMEs. Overall, the thesis represented a multidisciplinary effort linking biochemistry, biotechnology, and innovation policy to advance sustainable biotechnological solutions with real-world impact.
