Collection description

The present research project focused on school-to-work transitions and the career indecision during the transition in education systems. In the life span developmental psychology theoretical framework, this dissertation enhances the understanding of (i) the psychological and behavioral correlates of NEET phenomenon, and (ii) the difficulties of Italian adolescents and young adults in the career construction process . The 21st century world of work complexity (economic crisis, globalization, and the challenges of post-industrial society) is considered a risk factor for adolescents and young adults. Due to this situation, called dejobbing era, the young people experience difficulties in school-to-work transition and career paths destabilizations. In the EU-28 Italy is the context with the highest rate of NEET (young people not engaged in education, employment or training, 28.9%). The research project is organized into six studies, related to each other. The research topics make a contribution to the extant research in vocational psychology in Italian context and to the finalizing of career counselling models. Starting from explorative aims, the study 1 focuses on experiencing time, dimension of future, perception and satisfaction of health of young adult NEET, comparing with students and employed. The Study 2 aims to investigate psychological factors associated to the status of NEET, specifically transition to adulthood, time perspective and future vision and the impact on health, in terms of internalizing and externalizing. The Study 3 aims to identify homogenous groups concerning the NEET condition symptom-profiles. The aim of the Study 4 is to test the psychometric proprieties of Italian version of the parental career-related behaviors questionnaire (PCB), used in the last studies. The Study 5 pays attention to the relations between career decision-making, parental career-related behavior and career adaptabilities in Southern Italian adolescents and young adults, specifically middle school, high school and university students. Finally, the Study 6 proposes the qualitative interviews to Swiss career counseling practitioners aiming to study the career counseling models and the career orientations best practice. Starting from findings of quantitative studies and qualitative interviews, implications regarding counseling model and research future directions are discussed.
