Abstract
The eruption of Vesuvius of 1631 reaches an unusual echo in the media of that time : it is narrated in heterogeneous works that not only offer very different interpretations and representations of the event, but also mean to impose their version of events, presenting it as more credible than others, to make sure it is remembered. The comparison between the relaciones of Simón de Ayala and Juan de Quiñones can be useful to understand how the legitimacy of the testimony on the reported events is connected with the memory of the event. The two texts allow to emphasize some of the rhetorical and discursive structures that build the memory of events in the relaciones de sucesos.
