Abstract

This thesis investigates the nonlinear response and force-transfer mechanisms of gusset plate connections in steel concentrically braced frames, with emphasis on the interaction between braces, connections and surrounding frame components. The research addresses the limitations of conventional analytical methods for gusset plate force evaluation, which provide statically admissible design force fields but may not accurately reproduce the actual distribution of vertical forces, horizontal forces and in-plane bending moments at gusset-to-beam and gusset-to-column interfaces. The study was developed through a combined numerical and experimental framework. Detailed finite element analyses were carried out on corner gusset plate connections to assess the influence of modelling assumptions, boundary conditions, bolt preloading and connection detailing. The numerical results were compared with analytical methods commonly adopted in design practice, and semi-empirical formulations were proposed to estimate the force demand at gusset plate interfaces and validated against an independent case study. In parallel, tensile coupon tests and monotonic and cyclic stub-column tests were used to characterise the steel hollow-section brace components and validate the numerical modelling strategy. Finally, the cyclic behaviour of a chevron concentrically braced frame designed according to the European seismic framework was investigated through experimental testing and finite element simulation. The results show that gusset plate force demand is a system-dependent quantity, governed by brace axial response, connection deformability and surrounding frame stiffness. The thesis provides numerical and experimental evidence supporting a member–connection–frame interpretation of the seismic behaviour of steel concentrically braced frames.
