Abstract
This dissertation presents the findings of a three-year doctoral research project exploring language use in schizophrenia, with a particular focus on treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). The study encompasses the entire research process, from data collection to the initial analysis of the dataset. Specifically, semi-spontaneous speech samples were recorded from 20 patients, divided equally between individuals diagnosed with TRS and those with non-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (non-TRS) and balanced with a control group (10 participants). The resulting dataset, named CIPP-TRS (Corpus di Parlato Patologico Italiano in Pazienti Affetti da Schizofrenia Farmacoresistente), captures a particular aspect of schizophrenia since treatment resistance (TR- schizophrenia or TRS) is a particularly compelling subset of the broader schizophrenia spectrum, as it includes patients for whom conventional treatments have largely proven ineffective. This condition not only poses significant challenges for clinical management but also raises critical questions about the underlying mechanisms of resistance and their impact on various cognitive and communicative functions, including the linguistic manifestations that keep on resurfacing and/or persist, despite adequate trial and dosage of antipsychotic medication. Furthermore, it is extensively attested in the clinical population as it affects up to 34% percent of patients (Potkin et al., 2020). This research aims to shed light on the potential connections between treatment resistance and patterns of language use taking into account three domains of investigations: disfluencies, prosodic analysis and lived time through narratives.
