Abstract
This doctoral research analyses the environmental sustainability of cereal supply chains, focusing on common and durum wheat in southern Italy. Despite their strategic role, wheat systems show critical issues such as excessive nitrogen fertilization, inefficient soil management, and outdated machinery. The study follows a diagnosis-to-solution approach. First, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) combined with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) identifies key environmental hotspots and defines benchmarks for sustainable wheat cultivation. Second, field experiments translate these findings into practice, testing reduced soil nitrogen (−25%), foliar N applications, and biostimulants to improve nitrogen use efficiency and maintain yield and quality. The integrated LCA-PCA framework represents a methodological innovation that links environmental assessment with practical solutions, supporting data-driven sustainability policies and enhancing the competitiveness of cereal farming.This doctoral research analyses the environmental sustainability of cereal supply chains, focusing on common and durum wheat in southern Italy.
