Abstract

In this thesis the current formulation of the "Complexity equals Action" conjecture is reconsidered. A novel formulation is proposed, in which the complexity is not required to be reparameterization invariant, and the parametrization choice is dictated by a physical criterion. The criterion that will be used is that the action in any static and empty causal diamond should vanish. This choice effectively fixes pure AdS spacetime as the reference geometry, and this is used to compute the complexity of other geometries, such as asymptotically AdS black holes, with respect to AdS space. The main advantages of this formulation are that all results are finite, the complexity and its growth rate are always positive, and Lloyd’s bound generally holds better.
