Collection description

Epilepsy is one of the most frequent chronic neurological disorders that affects an estimated 25 million women worldwide. Contraception is an essential health concern for women with epilepsy (WWE) because most of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are potentially teratogenic. Oral contraceptives (OCs) are commonly prescribed for young women, however bidirectional interactions between some AEDs and OCs may compromise contraceptive efficacy, seizure control, or both. The main objective of this study is to characterize the safety of two different intrauterine device (copper or progestin) in WWE, by measuring AEDs concentrations and seizures before and after initiating the IUD in order to evaluate if the progestin IUD affects the serum levels of AEDs differently from the copper IUD.
