Collection description

The present work aims to explore the career choices of Italian high school students at the end of their secondary education path. The thesis uses a developmental psychology perspective in order to analyze the career transition of adolescents. The topic is also addressed by analyzing theories and approaches emerging from different disciplines and traditions. A two-time longitudinal study is presented as a main part of the current work. 183 young Italians have been followed from their last year of high school to their first year following secondary education. The scope of the study was to identify psychological antecedents and consequences of students’ career decisions. Different modalities of career choices have been found differently predicting psychological well-being indicators. Second-level career identity processes during school have been found predicting choice modalities. Career identity dimensions during school were found predicting outcomes of the transition. The results of the study are integrated within the career intervention literature in order to provide indications for supporting students in their life choices at the end of high schools.
