Collection description

This article aims to explore the iconography of St Emygdius in the colonial context, through the analysis of some devotional engravings published in the capital city of Mexico, in Puebla de los Ángeles, Guatemala, and Oaxaca, as visual complements of the devotional texts (novenarios) dedicated to this saint. These printed sources are quite interesting, as they provide information on the circumstances that fostered his devotion for protection against earthquakes. The engravings, such as the ones produced by artist José de Nava, from Puebla, suggest a close connection with the iconography of the saint, developed in Spain. The engravings show St Emygdius on a cloud over two disasters depicted: a city devastated by an earthquake, and boats menaced by a sea storm.
