Abstract
This PhD thesis, titled Residential segregation: definition of a new methodology of statistical and sociological analysis, proposes an innovative methodology for the analysis of socio-economic residential segregation. More specifically the aims are twofold: first to contribute to the methodological debate relating to the measurement of the phenomenon and its comparability between different urban contexts by defining a methodology for quantitative analysis, and second to generate new substantive knowledge through the application to selected case studies of this new methodology. The thesis adopts a multidisciplinary approach, combining knowledge and techniques from the statistical, geographical, and sociological disciplines. The strategy of analysis involves the use of areal interpolation methods, the compositional data approach, and the use of multivariate analysis techniques in order to define a socio-economic class composition index. The latter, combined with the use of spatial autocorrelation tools and the adoption of a criterion based on temporal distances to define neighbourhood relations between areas, makes it possible to identify and map segregated areas. Finally, the validity of the proposal is demonstrated through an application to case studies and the results are interpreted within the broader theoretical debate on the topic.
