Abstract

In the framework of the recent European political strategies devoted to the eco-sustainability of mass transportation systems, railway companies have been committed to research activities to find out innovative solutions, regarding both rolling stock and the electrical infrastructure, aiming the reduction of the energy consumptions and, therefore, of the operating costs and environmental impact. In this scenario, the thesis focuses on the use of wayside supercapacitor-based energy storage systems as the most viable mean to improve the energy efficiency of DC electrified urban transportation networks. The overall goal of this study is to propose and experimentally assess two control strategies approaches for the management of these systems and the evaluation of the consequent benefits on system performances by energetic and power quality point of view.
