Abstract

On the 5th of June 1688 Naples was hit by a violent earthquake. In the following weeks, the game of the beneficiata, the ‘Genoese Lotto’ introduced in Naples a few years before, was at the center of the concerns of central (Consejo de Estado and Consejo de Italia) and peripheral (Consiglio collaterale of the Kingdom of Naples) government institutions of the His- panic Monarchy. The idea that the divine wrath manifested by the earthquake was caused by the beneficiata was a widespread belief. This article deals with the political events that led to the abolition of the game and, in particular, with the role played by papal diplomacy. The case study is about the interpretative paradigms of disasters due to natural events in the Ancien régime societies, the institutional mechanisms of emergency management and the relations be- tween State and Church in the Hispanic Monarchy at the end of the 17th century.
