I suoi principali ambiti di ricerca sono attinenti alla filologia sanscrita, alla storia delle religioni indiane, agli studi tantrici e a quelli di filosofia indiana classica. Nel 2007 e nel 2011-2012 è stato visiting professor (Numata-Professor für Buddhismuskunde) presso l’Asien-Afrika-Institut (Hamburg Universität). Dal 2006 dirige un progetto di ricerca internazionale per l’edizione critica e lo studio di opere buddhiste inedite in sanscrito. I suoi lavori includono l’edizione critica e la traduzione dello Ṣaḍaṅgayoga di Anupamarakṣita con il commento di Raviśrījñāna (2000), la Sekoddeśaṭīkā di Nāropā (2006) e, insieme con H. Isaacson, la Sekanirdeśapañjikā di Rāmapāla (2014). È fondatore e coeditore della collana Manuscripta Buddhica (primo vol. 2008)./ [English]: Francesco Sferra is full professor of Sanskrit language and literature at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, where he has been teaching since 1998. His primary areas of expertise are connected to Sanskrit philology, the history of Indian religions, tantric studies, and classical Indian philosophy. In 2007 and in 2011–2012 he has been visiting professor (Numata-Professor für Buddhismuskunde) at the Asien-Afrika-Institut (Hamburg Universität). Since 2006, he leads an international research project for the critical edition and study of unpublished Buddhist works in Sanskrit. His works include the critical edition and translation of the longer Ṣaḍaṅgayoga by Anupamarakṣita with its commentary by Raviśrījñāna (2000), the Sekoddeśaṭīkā by Nāropā (2006) and (together with H. Isaacson) the Sekanirdeśapañjikā by Rāmapāla (2014). Fra le sue pubblicazioni figurano la curatela dei volumi Studies in the Kāśikāvṛtti. The section on pratyāhāras. Critical edition, translation and other contributions (2009), Bilingual Discourse and Cross-Cultural Fertilisation: Sanskrit and Tamil in Medieval India (2013), and Indic Manuscript Cultures through the Ages. Material, Textual, and Historical Investigations(2017)./ [English]: Vincenzo Vergiani is Professor of Sanskrit at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge. His main areas of research are the Sanskrit grammatical tradition and the history of linguistic ideas in ancient South Asia. In 2011-2014 he launched and directed the AHRC-funded project “The intellectual and religious traditions of South Asia as seen through the Sanskrit manuscript collections of the University Library, Cambridge” (http://sanskrit.lib.cam.ac.uk/). [Italiano]: I due volumi (Series Minor 97.1-2) in onore del sanscritista Raffaele Torella, studioso di fama mondiale, comprendono 39 saggi nel campo dell’indologia classica scritti da ex allievi e colleghi su una varietà di argomenti che spaziano dallo Śivaismo kashmiro (Bansat-Boudon, Baumer, Ratié) alla letteratura ornata (Boccali, Pieruccini, Franceschini, Isaacson, Sudyka) e comprendono contributi sullo yoga (Acri, Piano, Squarcini), gli studi vedici (Candotti e Pontillo), la filosofia del linguaggio (Vergiani), la recezione buddhista dell’Arthaśāstra (Eltschinger), i legami fra Śivaismo e Dharmaśāstra (De Simini), la trasmissione testuale (Harimoto, Kaul, Kawajiri), la tradizione dell'Āyurveda (Pecchia), la Bhagavadgītā (Pellegrini e Rigopoulos), la teologia viṣṇuita (Graheli), la filosofia (Bronkhorst, Freschi), l’epigrafia sanscrita in terra khmer (Goodall), l’architettura templare (Czerniak) e l’estetica (Cuneo e Ganser). Vi figurano inoltre nuove edizioni critiche e traduzioni annotate (Giunta, Watson) o edizioni e traduzioni di frammenti inediti di testi buddhisti (Saccone & Szántó) e dell’Abhidharma (Sferra), saggi di filosofia comparata (Ferrante, Sacha), studi su aspetti specifici del pensiero buddhista (Neri, Ferraro) e in particolare della tradizione logico-epistemologica (Franco, Steinkellner, Sanderson), nonché sulla storia dei rapporti tra l’India antica e il mondo occidentale (Scherrer-Schaub)./[English]: The two volumes (Series Minor 97.1-2) in honour of the world-renowned Sanskritist Raffaele Torella contain 39 essay in the field of classical Indology written by former pupils and colleagues on topics that range from Kashmirian Śaivism (Bansat-Boudon, Baumer, Ratié) to belles lettres (Boccali, Pieruccini, Franceschini, Isaacson, Sudyka) and include contributions on yoga (Acri, Piano, Squarcini), vedic studies (Candotti and Pontillo), the philosophy of language (Vergiani), the buddhist reception of the Arthaśāstra (Eltschinger), the links between Śaivism and Dharmaśāstra (De Simini), textual transmission (Harimoto, Kaul, Kawajiri), the Āyurveda tradition (Pecchia), the Bhagavadgītā (Pellegrini, Rigopoulos), Vaiṣṇava theology (Graheli), philosophy (Bronkhorst, Freschi), Sanskrit epigraphy in Cambodia (Goodall), temple architecture (Czerniak) and aesthetics (Cuneo and Ganser). They also contain new critical editions and annotated translations (Giunta, Watson) as well as the editions and translations of the unpublished fragments of Buddhist texts(Saccone and Szántó) and an Abhidharma text (Sferra), besides articles on comparative philosophy (Ferrante, Sacha) and studies on specific aspects of Buddhist thought (Neri, Ferraro) and, in particular, its logico-epistemologic tradition (Franco, Steinkellner, Sanderson), and on the history of the relationships between ancient India and the western world (Scherrer-Schaub).
