Abstract

Although supplier selection represents a critical topic to enhance firms’ competitiveness a dichotomy between literature and firms practices comes up. The large number of diversified approaches proposed in literature for supplier selection is opposed to few comparable straightforward qualitative approaches adopted in firms’ practices This research aims to identify the reasons behind this dichotomy by evaluating strengths and weaknesses of the approaches mainly proposed in literature, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Set Theory (FST) and proposing a hybrid model which combines AHP and FST strengths and overtake some of their weaknesses. An empirical study is also carried out to employ the hybrid model in two large companies operating in complex industries. The empirical study is carried out combining qualitative and quantitative methods ending up in a triangulation approach. The implementation of hybrid model in real firms gives the possibility to realize how it allows overtaking the issues related to AHP and FST when they are employed separately. Some difficulties are still related to hybrid model applications in real firms and these emerge especially when this model is adopted with operative purposes instead of strategic ones. One of the main finding evidenced by this research is, hence, that the operational purpose of theoretical models in firms practices biases their strategic aims causing their unsuccessful outcomes. Such findings allow highlighting the reasons behind the dichotomy to which this research is referred. This empirical work has both academic and managerial implication. It aims to provide a detailed assessment of AHP and FST techniques in the field of supplier selection representing a reference for academics but it also intends to convince practitioners and entrepreneurs, working in high complex sectors, that multi-faced theoretical techniques for supplier selection can represent a compelling added value alternative to the traditional qualitative approaches extensively adopted.
